Conflict can cause deep rifts in the framework of an institution. When a department chair is able to clearly communicate goals and expectations for faculty performance, this can mitigate potential conflicts and help to establish and maintain a healthy working environment. Despite these realities department chairs rarely receive the training needed to assume the role of conflict mediator.
